Observed viols

observed-viols

These are the viol players I saw in The Observer’s Book of Music. My memory had moved them around since, so that one had her back to the reader, and only one was a man, and they sat around a table, and there was no blue in the picture. How creative memory can be!

    that’s a G-viol I reckon! (Or a very small violer)

I think he’s just drawn that way. Otherwise he is a careful copy of Christopher Simpson. Note the size of his left hand: proportionate to a bass viol but not to the rest of his body.

I notice that the bow hold of the people in the picture is the same that I learned at my first Dolmetsch summer school: right on the frog. Later teachers moved my hand further down the stick, following all the contemporary paintings. I now use the position where the frog never quite touches the hand.
